This Excel tutorial explains how to freeze panes to keep the first column visible when scrolling in Excel 2011 for Mac (with screenshots and step-by-step instructions).
A simple solution to this problem is to simply Freeze the entire Row containing Columns headings. Once this is done, the Column headings will become frozen and will always be visible when you scroll down. Similarly, it is possible to Freeze Columns and also Freeze both Rows and Columns at the same time in Excel. Step 5: Freeze the panes. On a Mac go to the Window menu and then select freeze pane. On a PC, you’ll go to the View menu. One nice time saver on the PC version is it has the option on the View / Freeze Pane menu to freeze the first row and/or the first column.

Question: In Microsoft Excel 2011 for Mac, I have a spreadsheet and I need to freeze the first column. That way, I can see the first column at all times even when I scroll. How can I do this?
Answer: If you need to see the first column (column A) even after scrolling, you could try freezing the pane in Excel.
NOTE: Freezing panes only works when you are in Normal View.
To freeze the first column, open your Excel spreadsheet.
Select the Layout tab from the toolbar at the top of the screen. Click on the Freeze Panes button and click on the Freeze First Column option in the popup menu.
Now when you scroll, you should still continue to see column A.
